Secondary Weekly Update - 26.02.21

Barnet Twin Towns Challenge

In no time at all we have successfully reached both our third and fourth destinations, Ramat Gan (Israel) and Morphou (Cyprus). In doing so we have ticked off two more continents on our list, Asia and Europe, having already visited North America and Africa.

Following our departure from Jinja (Uganda) we travelled north through South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, before briefly crossing the Red Sea and into Israel. This section of the journey covered 2,190 miles. From here we travelled 239 miles across the Mediterranean Sea and into our fourth destination, Morphou (Cyprus).

We are at the halfway stage in terms of Twin Towns visited (Montclair, Jinja, Ramat Gan and Morphou), however with the remaining four destinations in Germany and France, you could say we are approaching the home straight.

Resources for Parents/Guardians

We are continuing to collate a PDF spreadsheet, attached, for schools to circulate to their school community. It contains useful links of ways in which parents/guardians can motivate their children to stay active and healthy throughout lockdown. We continually update this information each week with the latest resources released, which are marked ‘New’.

Updated Guidance for Schools

Following the Prime Minister's announcement on Monday, confirming the wider re-opening of schools from 8th March, the Department for Education has published updated guidance for schools (see page 58 for content in relation to 'physical activity in schools').

Important updates include:

‘Competition between different schools should not take place until wider grassroots sport for under 18s is permitted.’ This is to help align with DCMS guidance on grassroots sport.

The DfE has issued updated guidance on face coverings for secondary pupils. To note the additional information on face masks for physical activity (page 12): In addition, we now also recommend in those schools, that face coverings should be worn in classrooms or during activities unless social distancing can be maintained. This does not apply in situations where wearing a face covering would impact on the ability to take part in exercise or strenuous activity, for example in PE lessons.

Updated COVID-19 FAQs

afPE has produced a new set of FAQs for schools; following the government announcement referred to above.

The government guidance has been used as the basis for afPE’s interpretation of what this means in a Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) context. afPE have consulted widely to ensure that the advice supports the workforce and children and young people. As always, the employer makes the final decision so your working practices should be set by them.
