Barnet Twin Towns Challenge

We have now entered the latter stages of this challenge, the journey from Morphou (Cyprus) took us north-west across the Mediterranean Sea through Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungry, Slovakia and Czech Republic, before reaching our fifth twin town Tempelhof, a district in the German capital Berlin. This section of the journey covered 1,531 miles.

A big thank you to Foulds, Monkfrith, St John’s N20 and the Barnet Strava Club for their contributions this week. A reminder that in recognition for your pupil’s efforts so far, we have designed printable A5 certificates which can be found in the resources section here.

Resources for Parents/Guardians

We are continuing to collate a PDF spreadsheet, attached, for schools to circulate to their school community. It contains useful links of ways in which parents/guardians can motivate their children to stay active and healthy throughout lockdown. We continually update this information each week with the latest resources released, which are marked ‘New’.

Barnet Healthy Weight Management

BPSS are proud to be working with the Healthy Weight NHS Team by providing a programme of physical activity sessions. These children are referred as part of the National Child Measurement Programme and other health professionals working in Barnet. Typically the children are above the 99.6th Centile which places them in the very overweight category on the children's BMI centile charts.

Week two’s recorded sessions, aimed at 4-9 year olds and 10+, are now available via the BPSS YouTube channel. Please feel free to share these with any families within your school.

Updated Guidance for Schools

Following the Prime Minister's announcement on Monday 22nd February, confirming the wider re-opening of schools from 8th March, the Department for Education has published updated guidance for schools (see page 58 for content in relation to 'physical activity in schools').

Important update includes: ‘Competition between different schools should not take place until wider grassroots sport for under 18s is permitted.’ This is to help align with DCMS guidance on grassroots sport.

Updated COVID-19 FAQs

afPE has produced a new set of FAQs for schools; following the government announcement referred to above.

The government guidance has been used as the basis for afPE’s interpretation of what this means in a Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) context.

afPE have consulted widely to ensure that the advice supports the workforce and children and young people. As always, the employer makes the final decision so your working practices should be set by them.

LYG Virtual Dance

London Youth Games were excited to launch the LYG Virtual Dance event last Saturday (27th February). LYG Virtual Dance gives young Londoners the opportunity to stay active and express themselves through dance during the pandemic, whilst earning points for their borough.

LYG Virtual Dance will run for six weeks, with each week dedicated to a different style. A tutorial video introducing the style of the week will be set by a professional and will be launched every Saturday at 10am via the London Youth Games website and social media channels. The entry deadline is every Friday at 12pm.

For more information, please click here. A promotional flyer to promote to your pupils can be accessed here.
