Resources for Parents/Guardians

We are continuing to collate a PDF spreadsheet, attached, for schools to circulate to their school community. It contains useful links of ways in which parents/guardians can motivate their children to stay active and healthy throughout lockdown. We continually update this information each week with the latest resources released, which are marked ‘New’.

LYG x School Games Fitness Challenges

A big well done to the pupils from Henrietta Barnett and QE Boys that participated in the sixth weekly Fitness Challenge and collectively contributed towards Barnet’s overall score. Unfortunately we slipped two places down the leaderboard, from 10th to 12th position. Can we get back into the top 10 this week?

To support you and your schools with participating in the Fitness Challenges please find the Challenge Sheet for the final week below.

Updated Guidance for Schools – Reminder

Following the Prime Minister's announcement on Monday 22nd February, confirming the wider re-opening of schools from 8th March, the Department for Education has published updated guidance for schools (see page 58 for content in relation to 'physical activity in schools').

Important updates include: ‘Competition between different schools should not take place until wider grassroots sport for under 18s is permitted.’ This is to help align with DCMS guidance on grassroots sport. The DfE has issued updated guidance on face coverings for secondary pupils. To note the additional information on face masks for physical activity (page 12): In addition, we now also recommend in those schools, that face coverings should be worn in classrooms or during activities unless social distancing can be maintained. This does not apply in situations where wearing a face covering would impact on the ability to take part in exercise or strenuous activity, for example in PE lessons.

Updated COVID-19 FAQs  – Reminder

afPE has produced a new set of FAQs for schools; following the government announcement referred to above.

The government guidance has been used as the basis for afPE’s interpretation of what this means in a Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) context. afPE have consulted widely to ensure that the advice supports the workforce and children and young people. As always, the employer makes the final decision so your working practices should be set by them.

LYG x School Games Spring Finals – Save the Dates

London Youth Games are excited to announce that this year they will be holding a virtual Spring Finals! Tuesday 23rd and Thursday 25th March would have been the days they welcomed schools to Redbridge Sports Centre for two days of competition and festivals at the School Games Spring Finals. Whilst they are unable to bring everyone together in person this year, they didn’t want young people across London to miss out so have created a virtual offer for schools to get involved in and to celebrate all young Londoners getting together to be active!

We hope to share the activity pack in next week’s update, this will include all of the information you need to get involved. The pack will include activities for schools to incorporate into their PE, after-school sessions or for young people to participate in at home.
