School Description

The quality of teaching and coaching at Queen Elizabeth's School offers boys the opportunity to achieve School, county, divisional and national honours in major sports. We expect boys to strive for such honours through determination and commitment, which includes involvement in mid-week and Saturday practices and fixtures.

Representative teams are fielded in: rugby (A, B, C and D XVs); cricket (A, B and C XIs); athletics (A, B and C teams), cross-country (A, B and C strings); basketball; swimming and water-polo. Inter-school fixtures take place mid-week and on most Saturdays in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms

A full programme of inter-house matches underpins the School teams and gives more boys the opportunity to gain representative honours. All boys in both Key Stage 3 and 4 represent their house in two or more house sports activities.

The QE timetable includes three types of PE lessons:

  • 180 games, in which boys across the whole year are grouped by ability. These double lessons sometimes incorporate fixtures involving house teams, teams within sets or matches against other schools. Top-set boys are expected to carry on with school practices after school on '180' games afternoons, as well as attending another practice during the week.
  • 90 games, which are also double lessons, for which boys remain in their form groups and receive mixed-ability tuition.
  • Single PE lessons, in which mixed-ability groups enjoy activities aimed at developing boys' cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills, including indoor ball games, on-site orienteering and extra swimming for beginners.

Years 7 and 8 have three hours of games and PE each week, while for Years 9-11, the total is two-and-a-half hours. Pupils in Years 10 and 11 may choose to take the optional Junior Sports Leaders Award. In the Sixth Form, 180 games and working towards the Community Sports Leadership Award are both optional.

QE has many extra-curricular opportunities in sport.

  • Boys participate in national, regional and county sporting competitions in sports including: athletics; basketball; cricket; cross-country; Eton Fives; rugby; swimming; tennis and water-polo. Visit the games page [insert link] for details of fixture and results.

  • There are annual rugby and cricket tours for upper and middle school pupils and an annual Year 7 trip to Twickenham to watch the Varsity Match. Each February half-term, we run a skiing trip.

  • QE sports clubs include the weekly Circuit Club, our Weights and Fitness Club, a beginners' Swimming Club and a weekly Indoor Rowing Club. In addition, we have links to local athletics, rugby, cricket, water-polo and tennis clubs.
