PESSPA Survey Results April 2021

Thank you to the 70 schools who took part in the national survey we released between 26th – 30th April 2021.

Attached is the headline data on the report from the school survey across Barnet that demonstrates the extremely worrying effect of the third lockdown on our children’s health and wellbeing including:

  • 87% of teachers believe children’s physical fitness is worse
  • 67% believe wellbeing is worse
  • 78% believe children have returned to school with excessive weight

Tackling these issues by supporting schools to provide an active recovery for the children within your school is our number one priority which we have relfected in our new strategy and buy in offer.

We are currently working hard to address these issues with you all and we have already been able to prioritise an active recovery by supporting school staff deliver PE, School Sport, Physical Activity, Competition, Leadership, Sport programmes & targeted interventions across Barnet this term and throughout Covid.

Our work has been developed to enhance Resilient Schools, Healthy Schools and Healthy Weight programmes since last summer. If you would like Jo Eames to come and have a meeting with you regarding your whole school planning/PE & Sport Premium for PE, School Sport, Physical Activity and Wellbeing for 2021/22 please do drop her an email or call 07779 595051.

Another issue we are working hard on is the announcement for next academic year's Primary PE & Sport Premium. Within my role on the Schools Active Movement Board, we have written to Secretaries of State for DCMS, DfE, DHSC and I have also contacted our Barnet MPs to ask for them to table a question as to when this will be confirmed.

Please Note: Due to disruption caused by Covid-19 the Department for Education (DfE) has given permission for schools to ‘carry over’ any underspend from the academic year 2019/20 into this year 2020/21, but this must be spent and reported on by 31st July 2021.Schools must publish the amount of Primary PE and sport premium received for this year 2020/21. For guidance on this please visit Evidencing the Impact - Website Reporting Template - Association for Physical Education - Association For Physical Education | P.E. (afpe.org.uk) (updated on 24/05/2021)

We have also been working to get confirmation from DfE that this year’s carried over underspend on the PE & Sport Premium can be used for your BPSS buy in for the 2021/22 academic year, as long as invoiced by 31st July 2021. We will be sending out buy in options straight after half term within a survey.

We want to work with you to help ALL young people across the borough.
